As a principal data scientist, you will provide technical thought leadership to the Starbucks Data Science team, specifically bridging the verticals that support Store Analytics and Supply Chain Analytics. This team of data and decision science practitioners partner cross-functionally with data engineers, business experts and external vendors to guide business decisions using data analysis and consultation that requires understanding complex data relationships, predicting outcomes and developing a quantitative return on investment. You will establish and evolve technical standards for the team, help attract and develop the best talent, accelerate how we scale and deploy data science solutions, and support the team in delivering strategic initiatives to support business growth, using the latest in computing technologies and analytics approaches. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Leveraging your previous experience, we will enable you to:

  • Drive new methods to analyze structured and unstructured data
  • Introduce novel visualization and presentation paradigms to communicate discoveries-Identify connection points between data science domains (e.g., Store, Supply Chain, Customer, Partner) and architect solutions that ensure all relevant domains are aligned and appropriately represented
  • Build models than span multiple data science domains in partnership with more junior data scientists
  • Research, architect & advocate at the highest levels of the company for relevant emerging empirical methods, quantitative tools, AI and machine learning solutions that provide optimal solutions to achieve business outcomes
  • Identify and understand business problems from strategy through operational impacts
  • Identify business problems to solve that have the most value to the company
  • Present to executive leadership and other internal and external audiences, as an industry leader on data science topics
  • Initiate and own major company-wide analytic initiatives from a methodology perspective
  • Establish Starbucks analytic practices across the corporation
  • Mentor data scientists in algorithm development and corporate and industry-wide analytics evangelism

We’d love to hear from people with:

  • Minimum 10 Years of Experience in Data Science or related discipline
  • Education: MS+ (PhD preferred) with concentration in quantitative discipline -Stats, Math, Comp Sci, Engineering, Econ, Quantitative Social Science or similar discipline-PhD in quantitative discipline, preferred
  • Ability to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities
  • Mastery and comprehensive proficiency across most Modeling & Machine Learning Techniques (regression, tree models, survival analysis, cluster analysis, forecasting, anomaly detection, association rules, etc.)
  • Mastery and comprehensive proficiency across most Data ETL (Azure, Oracle, SQL, Python)
  • Mastery and comprehensive proficiency across most Analytic Languages (R, Python)
  • Big data processing techniques, preferred-Retail, customer loyalty, and eCommerce experience, preferred

The pay range for this position may be narrower than that displayed, depending on where the work is performed.
