Location/Division Specific Information

St. Louis, MO / Drug Substance Division - The Drug Substance Division is one of the five divisions that make up the Pharma Services Group. We specialize in both small and large molecule development and commercial drug substance services. This allows us to serve the needs of Small/Emerging, Mid-Sized, and Large Pharma sectors globally.

This Scientific position will work on projects in cell line & cell culture development, including transfection, cloning/sub-cloning, media/feed optimization, and bioreactor process development. This position will also support on technical/scientific project activities to implement strategies and technical solutions that meet customer needs and expectations. This is a hands on bench scientist position. The ideal candidate shall have excellent lab skills, strong documentation skills, demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data to draw conclusions and make recommendations, and strong collaboration and teamwork skills.

What Will You Do?

  • Execute Cell Line Development activities - i.e. transfections, stable pool generation, single-cell cloning and selection (experience with high-throughput methodologies is a plus).
  • Execute mammalian Cell Culture Development experiments to support the production and manufacturing of recombinant proteins (mAbs, bispecific, Fc-fusion) with activities including:
    • Clone and media/feed screening using high-throughput technology
    • Record results in notebook accurately, clearly, and regularly.
    • Prepare protocols and reports, including the evaluation and interpretation of technical data.
  • Participate in the planning of activities to meet the project timelines by working closely with the project leads.
  • Collaborate with cross-divisional partners within Thermo Fisher to progress internal technical-development projects.
  • Author or contribute to process development reports and technology transfer protocols.
  • Participate in project-team meetings. Present and discuss the data and project progress at those meetings.
  • Maintain and ensure safe laboratory environment and work practices.
  • Demonstrate a strong focus on continuous improvement. Help identify workflow, resource, or process gaps and execute on improvement projects.

Keys to Success

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.

Experience

  • No experience required, but 1-3 years of relevant of Industry experience related to Biologics manufacturing, upstream process development, and process engineering.
  • Lab experience working with aseptic cell line development and cell culture techniques, bench-scale bioreactors and/or automated systems (Beacon,Ambr®) preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Upstream cell culture experience using mammalian cells; experienced in transfecting, cloning/sub-cloning, and designing and optimizing cell culture performance via media/feed and parameter optimization (DoE).
  • Strong organizational, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong writing, communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills. Microsoft Project and/or Smartsheet skills are also preferable.
  • High attention to detail and ability to adhere to department standards and procedures.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, and technical procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely before groups of peers.
  • Ability to work constructively on a team and adapt in a changing environment.
  • Knowledge of GMP regulations in cGMP manufacturing environment preferred but not essential.
