Job Description:
The Carrier Sales Representative is responsible for securing the right carrier at the right price at the right time to deliver the customer’s goods on time. To be successful in this role, you will facilitate the achievement of business goals through strategic sales activities including managing a freight portfolio from pickup to delivery, providing and negotiating freight rates, building carrier relationships, and leveraging the knowledge of the industry to influence the decision-making process.
Responsibilities:
- Manage third-party carriers to cover customer-awarded freight.
- Work with other departments as needed to provide complete service to customers.
- Negotiate shipping rates with third-party carrier partners to assure the highest margin possible for hauling excess load capacity.
- Track every load booked to origin (during work hours; after-hours support will still track late/early stops after normal business hours).
- Each Carrier Sales Rep will be expected to make at least 50 OUTBOUND phone calls per day.
- Each Carrier Sales Rep will spend at least 2 hours each week focusing on sourcing new carriers based on new/existing business needs.
- Ensure that all accessorial, delays, and service-related issues are communicated to the Customer Service POD overseeing the account
- Request an audit of all necessary shipping and carrier documents before load tender.
- Verify the accuracy of freight billing and dispute discrepancies accordingly.
- Monitor carrier movement from the shipper to the receiver to ensure the load is delivered on time and in the intended condition.
- Follow up on service failures associated with carries and take corrective measures.
- Respond to a high volume of communications daily.
- Performs ad hoc projects and related functions as may be assigned by the Brokerage Operations Manager.
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of related brokerage, carrier development, and/or sales experience, preferably within the transportation industry.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and meet performance metrics
- Strong negotiation skills – persuasiveness, aggressiveness, confidence, resilient
- Ability to evaluate alternatives to make the best overall decision based on KPI metrics, service requirements, seasonal factors, customer relations, and driver needs.
- Organization and attention to detail
- Must be comfortable with technology and consistent technology upgrades and training.
- Market knowledge and time/distance geography are ideal.
- Confident decision-making skills, problem-solving ability, and issue-resolution skills.
