Native Movement seeks a highly motivated candidate to facilitate environmental justice advocacy opportunities for Alaskans focused in the western arctic and interior regions of Alaska. This position will engage in community gatherings, partner meetings, and local and regional gatherings to build & strengthen relationships as well as to promote culturally and community informed environmental justice; education, advocacy, and action. The regional organizer will focus on developing and implementing creative strategies to engage with stakeholders both in-person, written, and virtually. They will work collaboratively with others on building educational materials, organizing gatherings, and creating actions for stakeholders. The purpose of this position is to increase the grassroots “people-powered” advocacy at all levels of community and government. This position would be a part of a supportive, passionate, and dynamic team.


Environmental Justice Program Summary

This program endeavors to protect the rights of Mother Earth, the rights of Indigenous ways of life, and the rights of all beings to healthy waters, and lands in Alaska. This program works to build statewide advocacy and voice on key environmental justice issues that center the rights of Indigenous peoples and the rights of Mother Earth. Additionally, the program strives to identify and support grassroots organizing on key issues that aim to build broad and politically aligned bases. Furthermore, this program works to advance regenerative economies and healing justice through cultural revitalization and Indigenous ceremony as an effective and key strategy for protecting Mother Earth and our future generations. Native Movement centers collective power building as the means by which lasting impact can be made to protect cultural and food sovereignty and the rights of Mother Earth, the animals, plants, waters, air, and all her living beings.


Location:
This position is able to work remotely within interior, western or northern Alaska, and candidates from rural Alaska are encouraged to apply. Our physical offices are located in Anchorage and Fairbanks. Candidate must be based in Alaska.

Additionally, Native Movement’s standard work week is four days – Monday thru Thursday and Fridays are paid wellness days. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage and support frontline community members and advocates interested in advancing environmental justice & creating points of entry and leadership development opportunities for volunteers;

  • Collaborating with team members and partnered organizations on relevant events & projects

  • Staying informed and up to date on relevant issues within the region & coordinating with the communications team to create actions if needed or infographics to disseminate vital information

  • Work on campaigns, narrative development, and events in

  • Build partnerships with Tribal Administrators, regional non-profits, and other local or regional networks to establish localized and place-specific environmental justice narratives, education and actions

  • Plan and host volunteer events, community gatherings, 1-1 meetings, and gatherings;

  • Contribute to systematically tracking organizational progress and evaluating program achievements;

  • Participate in Native Movement staff gatherings in-person, when needed.


Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and relevant experience in grassroots community organizing, climate, environmental, and social justice;

  • Demonstrated understanding of climate change, the greenhouse gas effect, climate change impacts on Alaskan communities, adaptation and mitigation, and “false-solutions”;

  • An understanding of Alaska Native history, politics, and cultural values;

  • Proven history of positive teamwork and engagement with diverse communities;

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

  • Strong time-management skills and ability to meet goals and deadlines while working independently;

  • Adept at social media & web-based tools (Google Drive, Zoom, Slack, etc);

  • Flexible, adaptable, and growth-oriented
